Types of Scaffold Towers

Contrary to what many people think, there is more than one kind of scaffolding. When it comes to scaffolding towers, you should learn about the differences so that you can choose the proper one you need to get the job done correctly and safely. There are a few main popular types.

The first type is the birdcage scaffold. It is named as such because it is an independent scaffold that resembles a bird cage when it is fully erected. This scaffold is intended to be used only on single level projects, like ceiling work or working on the upper section of a standard home. There are multiple rows of vertical poles that are connected by horizontal pieces, making the cage. To set up this type of scaffold, you will need to use a lift.

Standard scaffold towers have four vertical parts that are joined vertically and horizontally. When you choose these scaffolds, you must have solid ground to support the feet or wheels. Typically, building blocks are often used for extra support. You must also limit the height to be no higher than three times the base measurements, for safety.

If you need a scaffold tower that can be moved around easily, a mobile, or portable, tower is the optimal choice. The frames feet have locking castors that roll. Often, these towers can be folded for maximum portability. There are even some manufacturers, like Werner, who have designed their towers to be stacked – the single units can be stacked to create a two level scaffold. If you are considering this type of scaffold towers, make sure the castors and pieces have safety locks. Also, check the weight limits of the castors because they may be different than the scaffold itself.

Once you have chosen one of the various types of scaffold towers, you have additional options available. There are accessories that you can get to help your productivity, like tool holders. You must also choose the materials your tower should be made from.

Scaffold towers are made from different materials. The material you choose will depend on how you will use the scaffold. Most single level towers are made from aluminum because they can be moved, taken apart, and assembled mush easier and quicker. Taller towers are usually made from steel or fiberglass.

Steel is chosen because it is stronger. A steel scaffold frame has a higher load allotment. Fiberglass is used for scaffolds that will be used around electricity. It helps make the scaffold non-conductive. Always choose the right scaffold material for what you do. If you are an electrician, choose fiberglass. If you are a painter, choose aluminum or steel.

Scaffold towers can prove to be much more helpful than a ladder. A ladder limits your range of movement. On the other hand, a scaffold gives you the ability to reach what you need while also allowing you to work with larger lengths. For example, if you are painting a room with high ceilings, a scaffold allows you to paint more of the higher sections without repositioning as often.

Scaffolding Towers – Find The Right Tower

Whether cleaning out your gutters or undertaking a large DIY project a scaffold tower is a cost effective and safe alternative to traditional scaffolding. For any construction or repair project that involves working at height, the scaffold tower will come into its own, particularly as they are within the budget of the average householder.  Safety should be of utmost importance and the scaffold tower should be erected and checked by someone experienced in the use of such structures.

The difference between a scaffold tower and traditional scaffolding is that scaffold towers are mobile, and usually on castors, allowing it to be moved from place to place which can come in very useful if doing a job which covers a large area. Traditional scaffolding is notoriously difficult to place level and balanced and is awkward to erect – certainly it would be very difficult to do so on your own. Scaffolding towers are however due to their mobility extremely easy to place and balance, particularly those constructed of aluminium.

There are many different types of scaffold tower available on the market and if you are inexperienced, choosing the right one can be quite a task, as can the decision whether to rent or buy. Buying a cheaper type of tower may seem to save money in the short term but if you feel that you are going to be using it a lot then you may be better off going for a slightly more well made, expensive one. It is rather like the choice between a Ford or an Audi!

The most common type of scaffold tower used for smaller jobs is the aluminium one.  This is probably because it is lighter and hence easier for one person to erect and dismantle by themselves. Steel scaffolding towers are extremely cumbersome and heavy and often take several people to erect. They are also obviously slightly stronger than their aluminium cousins and are used for heavier and industrial work. A disadvantage though is they are not easily movable and have to be dismantled and erected every time they need to change position. If you are a householder looking to do some work on your own house then the aluminium scaffold tower is probably your best bet.

Are you planning to work inside or outside? The reason why this has a bearing on your decision is that those working outdoors will need a scaffold tower of sturdier construction than those working inside where there’s no wind and the floor is likely to be more level. The next dilemma is – folding or standard scaffold towers? The obvious advantage of the folding scaffold tower is that it can be stored away neatly and unobtrusively in your garage or outbuildings., whilst standard scaffolding, although not folding, can be stacked tidily if you have a lot of scaffolding.  Once you have made your decision you can finally get your job done.
