The Right Scaffolding for the Job

Scaffolding can be more helpful than many types of ladders. The problem with ladders, regardless of which kind, is that they limit movement. You have to repeatedly step down the ladder, move it, and climb back up just to continue working. Actually, for larger jobs like painting, gutter cleaning, and washing siding, a scaffold is more productive. A scaffold is either fixed or mobile.

A fixed scaffold can be independent or attached, which is called a putlog. Independent scaffolds are set up along the side of the building. They have four to six vertical legs on the perimeter, either two or three, and the remaining side is attached directly to the building. An independent scaffold is more common, but a putlog scaffold is used for heavy duty construction jobs.

In contrast, mobile scaffolding is similar to an independent scaffold, yet also different. Mobile scaffolds are not attached to the building. They are designed to be used primarily for light duty tasks like painting and cleaning. Many models fold for easy set up, storage, ans transporting. They will also have wheels, or castors, that allow you to roll the scaffold without lifting it or needing assistance.

Choose the right scaffolding is important. The best way to do this is by figuring out which scaffold will help you get the job done most effectively. There are several factors to consider.

Are your projects for a profession or just home maintenance? If you are looking for scaffolding for your work, what type of work is it? For professions, you should choose scaffolds that are durable, but there are some other considerations. If your work is heavy duty, a steel frame is better. If you work at higher heights and need more security, choose a putlog scaffold. For home maintenance, you will not need anything heavy duty. Instead, choose mobile or folding scaffolds. These kinds are best suited for painting and cleaning windows or gutters. They can be folded so that you can store them until you need to use them, without consuming too much space.

Choosing the material that your scaffold is made from is just as much of an important part of getting the right one as the type. With three different materials, there is a scaffold available for any type of project that you might come across, regardless of the size it is. The materials that are used for making scaffold frames are steel, aluminum, and fiberglass.

Steel scaffolds are designed for heavy duty use. They are more durable which means they can take repeated abuse; they also usually have higher weight limits. Aluminum scaffolds are more popular for light duty use. These types are the mobile or folding ones; the aluminum makes them more lightweight. Fiberglass scaffolds are designed to be used around electrical components. They are a little heavier than aluminum, but are still maneuverable.

Scaffolding has many practical uses. If you would use a ladder to complete the project or task, a scaffold can be used instead. The biggest benefit is being able to work larger spaces. You also have more foot surface to move around safely.
